I think the fart analogy works well in the same scenario.
If there was a person about to do a loud wet fart in the same room you're in, ass pointing toward you, would you prefer if they were wearing underpants and were at least 6 feet away, or not?

This isn’t even her idea. There’s some random meme from the early pandemic along the lines of “if cotton underpants and denim jeans can’t stop a fart, what makes you thing a mask can stop a deadly virus.”
Also, living overseas in a country where everyone still wears masks indoors, there are not “so many people” in the states still wearing masks. Every time I go back I think I see maybe 1 out of a couple hundred at the most.
And yeah, it ignores basically everything we understand about respiratory particles. But its intended to sew disinformation and mistrust, so it doesn’t need to be correct in the slightest. It just needs to “feel” true to people who want to believe what they want to believe.

u/Ocbard Nov 29 '22
In case of Covid and similar diseases the virus travels on moisture that you breath out. Also even a pretty flimsy mask will limit how far you blow your breath from you so to infect someone you'd need to get closer to them or spend more time in their surroundings.
To people who say, that a mask cannot help for reasons like that stupid bitch in OP, I ask if they can blow out a candle with the mask on, if they can't the mask also prevents them breathing and spitting on other people. It's not fool proof prevention, but it is a serious limiting factor to spreading the virus.

What I love about this argument is that if you approach it with any amount of critical thinking, the only conclusion you can arrive at is that every hospital and sterile assembly line on earth has just arbitrarily made up a series of expensive, cumbersome, and entirely unnecessary procedures without ever having tested their validity.
Like, a hundred years of advancements in the field of medicine. Millions of hours of problem solving. But, no no, you didn't think about the fart and the high quality cotton underwear analogy, you bumbling moron. What about fart smells? Take off your mask you buffoon. What do you mean "research"? "Science"? Have you even thought about farts and thick, high quality cotton underwear?

I love when they complain about the WHO’s guidance changing. “They lied and said we don’t need masks! Now they say we do? Who’s paying them to say this!?”
Like ok, first of all, they didn’t lie. See, there’s this thing called learning, and as we learned more about the virus, our actions against it changed. This is not a conspiracy, this is literally how humans have survived as long as we have, because we can adapt to changes.
19
u/Taniwha_NZ Nov 29 '22
Sure, but if you formed your core beliefs about the world by having them handed to you at age 5, and you've never changed your mind about any of it, then seeing other people regularly update their opinions as new facts arrive must be terrifying. They don't live in a world where beliefs get updated to match reality. In their world, reality that disagreees with existing beliefs must be rejected, usually because it's a plot against your people by satan's people.

The only thing I’m really bummed about this is that my employer in 2020 created a giant pool of PTO-Sick time. We basically get a month off if we ever get Covid - and I never did. We also have our sick time in the Extended Leave format, meaning the only time you can access sick time is if you’re sick for at least three days, otherwise you have to pull from your vacation (seriously, worst policy ever since folks will just go to work sick - and we are in healthcare).
But alllll that free time I can’t access? 😭

I don't have sources right now, but an experiment was performed to see if underwear does protect others from a fart. They do, surgeons perform surgery for a ridiculously long time sometimes, they needed to know if it was sanitary to release gas in the surgery as opposed to stepping out and having to re-scrub every time. The smell still exists, but the infectious particles are held tight.

Some of these people are legit dumb about this (not that you didn't know that).
I was listening to the end of the Dan Bongino show because my local station decided to let him intrude on our sports station. Anyway, he has a caller and this is what he says:
"Ever use a garden hose and put your thumb over the end to make the pressure shoot out higher? Trying to stop it, you actually pressurize it. That's what these masks do. They actually aeresolize the virus."
Dan Bongino: "Well there you heard it, guys. He's right."

It’s actually a pretty great argument in favor of masks: https://www.discovermagazine.com/the-sciences/do-farts-carry-germs-well-it-depends-on-whether-you-are-wearing-pants
tl;dr: clothing acts as a filter preventing fecal bacteria from escaping your pants. Much in the same way masks work.
And an N-95 mask will generally filter smells.

u/cptnamr7 Nov 29 '22 edited Nov 29 '22

The distinction here is whether fabric you wear will prevent you from other people’s germs, or protect others from your germs.
The general consensus is that cloth will protect others but isn’t going to necessarily protect you.
However, an N95 mask will do both; protect you and others. Both from farts and from COVID.

I don’t know, at least not in this particular pairs case? They seem genuinely ANGRY, like there’s visible anger on their face and in their voice. One example was we went to get breakfast and a family of 4 had 2 masked seniors. Immediately caused them to get this mix of anger and frustration solely about folks being masked, then go back to their regular resting bitch faces.
It’s weird. I’m autistic ex bartender so I’m excellent at both detecting patterns and an expert in reading body language and faces. I think that’s why it confuses me so much. Because COVID 19 mostly travels on droplets of spit and other liquids when you cough and sneeze, which dont typically stay suspended for very long. A mask prevents those droplets from traveling when expelled. Where as farts are gas molecules. A molecule is drastically smaller in magnitude than a virus. To stop a gas molecule, one would need a hepa filter. A virus is NOT a gas molecule.
*EDIT Hepa filters dont filter gases.
Does that answer the question? Can someone tell her?
