That's just not true. We have more than enough resources for everyone to live a middle-class lifestyle, but the powers at large can not allow such a large population base to not be in dire straits. If a majority of the population is kept living paycheck to paycheck, they have greatly reduced incentive to protest and risk what little they have to gain what the rest of the developed world enjoys as basic necessities (low childcare costs, Healthcare, free higher education, even the basics of giving schoolchildren free school lunches jfc.) The best (meaning the worst) was people posting images of the First Lady cooking on a gas stove three years ago, as if somehow she should have been able to predict that they would eventually be linked to childhood asthma.

You're wrong, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is an independent agency of the United States government, not a think tank.
"In the memo dated Oct. 25, 2022, Richard Trumka Jr. — whom President Biden appointed to serve on the five-person Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) — wrote to a fellow commissioner that there was sufficient evidence for the agency to move forward with a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPR) to ban gas stoves in the near future"
24
u/jldmjenadkjwerl Feb 03 '23
The study everyone is talking about recommended more research to figure out if gas stoves should possibly be recommended for bans in the future. No immediate action or policies or politics are even being considered by law makers.

u/Boner_Elemental Feb 03 '23

15
u/CactaurJack Feb 03 '23
You've got some good replies already, but I'll add a bit. I used to live in a shitty apartment when I was finishing out college. I had a gas stove that worked off a pilot light, no electricity involved. The place CONSTANTLY smelled like gas, because of course it did. I had CO sensors around the place, but not ideal. In the warmer months I could open the windows, but during the winter the place was proper sealed and due to grandfather laws, there was no dedicated ventilation system for said gas stove.
I'll be the first to defend gas stoves since I worked professional kitchens for a long time, and I love them, but we gotta get better about regulations regarding ventilation, installation and maintinence. If an electric/induction range busts, it just doesn't work, the same cannot be said about gas stoves. There was a tiny piece of legislation about reducing/regulating new installs and the GOP LOST. THIER. FUCKING. MINDS.

u/MartinSchou Feb 03 '23

Recent research shows they're bad for your air quality and worse for your health than previously thought, we have multiple viable replacements including at least one that is better for cooking, safer, and just in general better in every way, so naturally the smart thing to do is to phase out the undue risk with regulation and encourage the safer alternatives that aren't a compromise on quality.
So a completely perfectly reasonable response to new data, which the fragile reactionaries predictably view as an attack on tradition, masculinity, and freedom.
If it sounds stupid and ridiculous, well, that's just the republican party.
21
u/hysterical_landmark Feb 03 '23

I mean, it is worth pointing out the other side too — certain ethnic foods, especially Chinese/Taiwanese cooking, cannot be adequately replicated with electric and induction cooking appliances yet. And indeed the air quality impact of gas stove cooking has recently been compared to wildfires as well as car exhaust and in some cases is more concerning than those.
But yeah “omg first they come after our guns then they come after our stoves” is fake Republican outrage over nothing. Especially when it’s usually white people whose cuisine largely consists of slowly melting dairy products to smother on top of a tasteless starch — ideal for induction and electric stoves.

I'm all in for an electric oven with a gas stove top.
Best combo and makes the oven easy to clean too. They usually have a clean function that reduces crap inside to nothing bar a powder inside it or most of the stuff goes up an exhaust. Both still require a light wipe down, but gone are the days of spending hours cleaning the damn oven.
I love electric ovens. Can't go back. Plus the even heat is just simply the best.
Though gas stove tops is still the way for cooking... At least for the time being. Maybe induction will get to the point it can handle all styles of cooking. But so far? Not impressed with how limited they are.

This isn’t about gas stoves. This is about the Republican Party running out of things to fear monger about. Right now we have gas stoves and candy that doesn’t turn Tucker on. People are still buying M&Ms. The vast majority of republicans susceptible to total bs have electric stoves and aren’t going to buy gas stoves. The Republicans still have drag queens to use as bogeymen (bogeyqueens?) but all those people in middle America who vote red even understand that they have never seen a drag queen or a drag show. Right now they might still believe those drag queens may be coming to Nowhere, Nebraska in vans filled with antifa and illegal aliens who are going to take their jobs, but a small part of their brains is telling them they never saw any antifa before and all the illegal aliens are already working their farms and poultry processing plants and God knows they don’t want those jobs and if there were no illegals working there the entire town of Nowhere would shut down.

I was, however, using hyperbole to make a point. There are decent people in Nebraska who are not bigots. They know bigots, they are related to bigots, and they likely vote for bigots. But deep down, they are aware that what is going on isn’t “winning”. It isn’t “triggering the libs”. It isn’t anything sane or normal. And they are smart enough to understand that most of what they are being told makes no sense at all. They are not sure, perhaps, how to handle this information, but they know. And any intelligent person involved in Republican politics realizes this. They are in go big or go home territory, because they have lost almost every hand. All they can do is bet it all and bluff.

It really only makes sense in areas where there is a lot of extra natural gas as a result of oil drilling. Natural gas is so cheap that transporting it long distances isn't even worth the effort. Florida has no natural gas drilling so everything they use has to be trucked/shipped in.

Liberal with a gas stove here. I have never in my life thought about it. I think the over part is electric and the range is gas. I don’t know or care. I have really issues to figure out like which dress and mustache combo I’m putting on my Potato Head.

My gas stove owning/loving liberal ass went to a credible news site and learned that the hubbub was nonsense.

They just suggested you have ventilation.
Why they don't build outside vents standard over ANY stove blows my mind.

As a liberal who prefers gas stoves to electric and can't afford high quality induction stoves, this is the stupidest attempt to manufacture outrage I've ever seen.

Essentially, look at whatever is dangerous/hazardous to your health/expensive and that is what the conservatives LOVE. they don't want to be alive, they want to be as contrary to logic as possible.

Time for Dems to lie too. Free healthcare after we cut your taxes. Fuck it. Why not. A free AR gun and a pick up truck if you vote for us. Abortion will be illegal. Immigrants will be put to deported to Congo and put to work in cobalt mines. regular 300$ weekly deposits.Just make shit up. They'll believe it.

I don't understand what they're mad about. Studies show gas stoves cause asthma in children. I thought these people cared about children? They're always shrieking about how the gays are gonna eat Christian kids or something.

If Democrats started touting the benefits of oxygen, Ron DeSantis would ban breathing
85
u/JohnStamosAsABear Feb 03 '23
Ron DeSantis would ban breathing
Didn’t this whole thing start because a study found a link between children with asthma and gas stoves?
He’s literally trying to inflame a culture war because some people wanted less kids to have asthma.
25
u/say592 Feb 03 '23
Yes, essentially. There are climate implications, of course, but it's about very localized air quality, the air quality in your house or even in your kitchen. A gas stove without a vent that vents outside (most don't) is like filling your house with the worst smog. Part of the consequences of that definitely are asthma and other breathing problems.
8
u/Lo-siento-juan Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
Imagine working you life to demonstrate the link between gas stoves and asthma, you have a breakthrough and are validated - this could improve the health of many people, you feel proud.
Then after you've delivered it you watch the news and see because of it the only tangible result is a tax cut on gas stoves and right wing loons racing out to buy ove
7
u/ThePopDaddy Feb 03 '23
Yeah, I don't know how an independent research study that said gas stoves may be harmful for breathing turned into "LIBS ARE COMING FOR YOUR STOVES!"

It’s terrifying to me.
I’m a woman in Florida. If I get raped, there is very little justice.
I could have to co-parent with a rapist. I could have to share custody. I could have to pay child support.
I have been married to my husband for over 20 years.
Will it be our duel income they base the child support on?

Only the elite, will once again, benefit from the party of clowns "tax cuts".
Exactly this. The only houses I've ever been to in Florida with gas were upper-middle class and above. Poor people have electric coil stoves.
8
u/Hattrick42 Feb 03 '23
That’s not always the case. I had a cheap apartment in Gainesville that was on gas. Many rural areas have gas, it isn’t piped through infrastructure, but delivered to tanks outside their house on a regular basis.

How does he justify tax exemption for gas stoves over other stoves?
Just trying to score political points through outrage culture for those people who get their news from memes on facebook.
They're trying to take our guns! Democrats say They're dangerous. There's too many school shootings. So here in Florida we're going to give ever child a gun.
And that will solve school shootings? No. God no. Just the opposite. Get your thoughts and prayers ready. But, its all worth it to take cheap shots at democrats.

Republicans are fascist.
Fascist are reactionary in policy to their perceived enemies.
Democrats are their perceived enemies.
Republicans will react(oppose) any policy or guidance of Democrats.
Their entire structure is organized around, "We oppose Democratic policy because it comes from Democrats"
Example: Stimulus checks

It's just more virtue signaling to the mouth-breathing knuckle draggers whose votes he wants. And it's a fucking travesty that he's spending his time and influence on such useless shenanigans rather than doing something to benefit his constituents as a public servant. I don't want to hear another word from these assholes who move here to Florida because "TaXaTiOn iS tHeFt" but then continue to vote for and fund this guy's salary to dick around doing nothing useful.

It’s funny that this is what they latch onto. A large portion of red America doesn’t have natural gas available to them.

u/amathis6464 Feb 03 '23
Yea, it’s not smart to have house’s prone to being tossed into the sky by massive hurricanes all hooked up to natural gas lines. That’s another disaster waiting to happen…..

And just think, this is all in opposition to the fact that scientific studies recently out show that gas stoves are harmful to us more than previously thought. These people seem to have an agenda against science and I find that remarkable.

Friendly reminder that trying to fight someone online is about as effective as throwing a bagel at a bulldozer. A lot of what we talk about gets people pretty emotional, but be mad at policies, not other users.
