You just gotta assume that there is a 99% chance that an old white man from Arkansas might have been virulently and comically racist at some point.

43

u/x1009 ☑️ 5d ago

Given the polling from southern whites back then, it's more likely than not that they're racist af.

31

u/Far_Vehicle_1520 5d ago

If his viewpoint changed he wouldn’t have threatened to fire any players that chose to exercise their right to free speech and kneeling during the anthem. He treats his players like property. Always have. It’s not hard to notice when you grow up in Dallas. Your rationale is about as flimsy as that old I couldn’t possibly be racist because I have friends, family, lovers, etc. that are outside my race excuse that racist love to use. Super original

“I have black people workjng for me…”

If that makes a person not racist, then slave owners were totally not racist. Come on, let’s at least try not looking stupid here.

“But he PAYS them!” Yeah, he pays what he has to, because they make him richer and richer. That doesn’t mean shit.

Consider that he also threatened them to stop protesting murder by police.

Why are the Cowboy´s called America´s Team? I think I´ve heard that before, genuinely curious as to why them? Cause Cowboys are an American thing?

114

u/ChesterNorris 5d ago

There were fewer teams in the 1970's. Dallas got a lot of tv airtime, west of the Mississippi. They were also a really good team under coach Landry. Marketing department made the audacious claim and it stuck.

In any case, go Giants!

25

u/nightstalker30 ☑️ 5d ago

They still get a lot of airplay out here. I’m a Chicagoan recently transplanted to Las Vegas. A good friend here grew up a Cowboys fan because they were the nationally televised game out here all the time, and I’ve seen more more Cowboys games being shown as the Fox/CBS game of the week out here. It seems that if the Raiders aren’t on, odds are the Cowpokes will be shown.

It’s not like it’s a secret.

17

u/Slim_Him35 5d ago

You either Cleary are being a troll, or you just googled "who's Jerry Jones" right before making that comment. Jerry has had a couple slip ups over the years. And he's not a man known to apologize for anything that he says. Multiple players have spoken about instances with Jerry. This isn't new news. And I've been a fan of the cowboys since I was small, Jerry has always been unapologetically himself (unfortunately).

Someone posted this before and there was a response about Jerry being 14-years-old at the time.

For me, “reformed racists” will always get the “cautious” treatment from me. I can be polite and civil. But to have full trust? Nope.

u/Dry-Bird-2993 this sub bro 5d ago

I mean..it's possible for a racist to reform. And i'm 100% sure it has happened. But we also have to keep america in context with it. Cause a reformed racist in america is like a reformed sex addict living in a country wide continuous orgy. The amount of will power it would take to stay reformed is astronomical.

653

u/PrivateIsotope ☑️ 5d ago

I'll never forget this comment about reform, from none other than Glenn Beck. He said that he accepts people change...but what's your pivot point? When was it that you decided you were wrong, and why? If you can't articulate that, you probably haven't changed.

Has Jones ever told anyone about the time that he decided racism wasn't worth it?

242

u/ChrysMYO ☑️ 4d ago

https://archive.ph/tb0Mm

Here's a non paywall version of the article.

They ask Jones. And basically the answer is no. The same myths he believed about race at 14 are the same basic ideas he has now. He doesn't hate specific Black people but his answer to structural disparity is that no Black person has just worked hard enough.

242

u/PrivateIsotope ☑️ 4d ago

And that's the thing about racism America doesn't seem to get. It has nothing to do with hate. Ideas like Jerry has are worse than hate, it's an apathy that maintains the status quo. Black people don't advance because they don't work hard, not because we never gave them the opportunity because we all believe they don't work hard.

u/ChrysMYO ☑️ 4d ago

Absolutely agree

Reformed racists, however, would have fully and publicly owned up to this repeatedly and put themselves and their history on blast. I've met people who were a part of neo Nazi groups when they were younger and they all but open up with "I was once a skinhead I was an idiot who was suckered and now I try to stop other people from being suckered."

Anyone quiet about it is more concerned about how they look than doing better.

I just straight up don't trust "reformed" racists period. Not saying that it's impossible for someone to change their views, but it's every bit as likely that they simply learned to hide their racism behind closed doors and plausible deniability. They're some of the last people that I would ever provide the benefit of the doubt, especially if someone's well being is on the line.

29

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 4d ago

but it's every bit as likely that they simply learned to hide their racism behind closed doors and plausible deniability.

4

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 4d ago edited 4d ago

I hear you. Distrust is what perpetuates discrimination in the first place. With me it's also a feeling of anger, increased cynicism and outright disgust towards a lot of older (and younger) white people following the Trump administration (especially his so-called Christian voters). Though I get that plenty of white people not only don't support Trump but hate his guts for the same reasons we do. And I'll still at least give them the benefit of the doubt. But as a black man, I always try to stay cautious. At least initially. And it's sad that it's like that.

Also, I appreciate that you gave your opinion and disagreed with me in a way that was respectful and not confrontational.

Honestly I am not surprised, nor am I condemning him for something he did at 14 years old when he’s now 80 years old. I say this as a 40 year old black man that grew up in the south where we used to call stuff “gay” and other homophobic tropes as a way of life. I am a vastly different person as a grown man than I was as a teenager and love my gay cousin and his partner, have gone to drag Queen shows to support gay friends etc. bottom line is that I will not judge someone for what they did as a teenager with the hope that someone would be as lenient with me.

8

u/InterrobangDatThang ☑️ 4d ago

It's pretty different when you did something as a teen and changed your actions as an adult. Denounced your former actions as an adult AND has is society that is (while not at all perfect) leaps and bounds more supportive of your change than it had been 25 years prior. Jones is not reformed. He defends rather than denounces what he did as a 14 year old. His actions then inform his actions now and he operates in a society that fully supports his racism and hasn't changed a whole lot since the moment of the picture above.

We don't have to "not judge" everybody. A lot of mfkrs need to be judged. The vast majority of folks his color, from his era, and location - need to absolutely at least be taken under a higher level of scrutiny when it comes to racism - that is the very least price they can pay for ever being allowed to operate as a superior human being in this country.

I will not judge someone for what they did as a teenager

Not even when it relates directly to something they did three years ago? And probably informs their choices to this day?

134

u/OohYeahOrADragon ☑️ 4d ago Silver

This may explain the origin of his actions but you judge him based off the adult he’s become. These children are repeating the hate they’ve been taught. 14 yrs old is a child you hear me. Idgaf what nobody’s bar mitzvah say.

You wouldn’t blame a 14 yr old girl for being groomed. You wouldn’t say she chose to be a 30 yr olds girlfriend. You wouldn’t criticize her for not recognizing this isn’t ok.

But as you become an adult, you have better insight to comprehend the gravity of all the stupid horrible shit you were taught/influenced by. You recognize where the outdated thinking of your parents/adults came from and you really examine your own behaviors/beliefs too. All the choices you make as an adult are fair game after that. You judge that part. You make amends for all the stupid shit you did by doing better as an adult. Rise above your raising.

I would imagine, for an owner, that they are measuring out how tall, strong, and athletic their prospects are (NFL combine), then they build their team and play against another (field nxxxxxx vs field nxxxxxx). It’s like the movie Django, prize fighting. And when your nxxxxx wins you reward him with a hot bath and some liquor, maybe a woman, which would be the equivalent of the fame and riches today. That’s what I imagine the mindset of an owner of a NFL team, like Jerry Jones, is. And the cowboys were my favorite team too!

My mom is 89 and I’m sure was never racist even though her father was. Lot of racists out there and one thing that really bugs me is when other white people assume I agree with them. Racism, misogyny and bigotry are the worst things in our country right now. And yes, Jerry Jones seems like a phony.

I loathe racism.

However, I also understand that young people raised surrounded by racism at every level of their lives should be granted some grace until they are old enough to question what they were taught by family, teachers, friends, and so on.

It is easy to ignore the forces that shape people. Each generation can see the faults of those that came before but don’t see their own stupid takes.

Not a Jones fan at all, but the pictures of young people in the South protesting integrating schools always break my heart. Young Black people being horribly abused and young White people raised to be stupid and cruel. I often wonder how many of them, like Nazi youth, feel a deep abiding shame for their behaviors back then.

Didnt he first kneel with his players showing solidarity, then when he saw the public backlash turned quickly against? I feel like i remember him kneeling arm in arm with the cowboy players.

In the end it’s always money that talks.

Fun fact, my dad was a LIFE Long Dallas fan until this guy was so impossibly racist that he made my dad jump ship to the Eagles. The man had everything. A cowboys watch, a bean bag chair, a blanket, etc. He got rid of it all. I got him an Eagles hoodie for Christmas...he doesn't know yet. 👍🏾

-21

Just looking huh? He’s not on the side of the black people. Tells you all you need to know.

21

u/Mac_Mustard ☑️ 5d ago

So since the major corporations and all the people who run them are NOW acknowledging racism is wrong, that means they’re on our side? LOL

-8

u/Tolliver73 5d ago

I was talking about him in the picture physically. Not symbolically. At the time he’s not standing on the side of the black people. When something like that is happening you’re not just looking. “Silence favors the oppressor”.

No surprise here. Think about it, most white people probably have these types of racist relatives that they sit next to every holiday. White people are able to compartamentalize their families racism quite easily. Some even present themselves an ally who say bullshit like “I can’t stand my grandpa. He’s so racist.” while hugging him every time they see each other.

“I knew the dude was racist but I didn’t know he was on this level.”

Honey, a racist is a racist is a racist. Ain’t no “levels”.

So to the downvoters, let me clarify: There was once a local news story about this guy who police were searching for. He was a known house burglar but recently, someone was found dead in the same neighborhood he was known to burglarize and police wanted to question him about it. Anyway, somehow the news team was able to contact his mom for an interview to ask of his whereabouts. While telling the news team she didn’t know, she also defended her son’s actions by stating: “My son is not a killer. He may break into people’s houses, but he doesn’t go around killing people.”

In my eyes, her son is still a criminal, whether he’s a burglar or a murderer. At the end of the day, he still commits crimes. If there was a married white couple who were asked about their views of non-whites and the wife said, “Well, I don’t like black people. I can’t help that we have to shop and go to school with them. But that still doesn’t mean I have to like them.” Versus her husband who says, “I can’t stand the n*****! If I had it my way, none of ‘em would exist!! If I see one, I’d shoot it on sight!” At the end of the day, both the wife and her husband are racists, no matter which “level” they are on. If they are intolerable of POC, they are intolerable of POC, whether it’s by a slim margin or a majority.

Glad to see the comments here. This was on a different subreddit yesterday, and all the top comments were making excuses and whitewashing and being like “people can change!” It was truly sickening.

Like, I get that people should be allowed to change and given room to change, but until they’ve proven that they have done so, GTFO of here with that bullshit.

People were also quoting an interview he gave once where he claimed that nobody there knew what was going on and were just curious. SMH. Does that belligerent fucker with the cigarette look like he’s “just curious?”

Jones’s words and actions are STILL, to this day, racist as fuck. He 100% knew what he was doing that day just as he 100% knew to lie about it later.

When racist assholes show you who they are, BELIEVE THEM.
